For Ben's birthday in May, I bought him a sushi making kit (a.k.a. a bamboo mat) and we finally broke it in.
| It was an expensive trip to Whole Foods. |
| Ahi, shrimp, and crab, oh my! |
| To keep us hydrated. |
| [SUPER] sticky rice. The recipe called for sugar, but I didn't have any and we forgot to pick some up at the store. So, with measuring cup in hand, we took a trip to our neighbors' to ask for sugar. Yes, we literally went door to door looking for a cup of sugar. Thank you, Vegan neighbors, for your 1/2 cup of sugar. It was nice to meet you. And, we owe you. |
| Crab for CA rolls. |
| Okay, we cheated and used frozen dumplings, BUT we did make the dipping sauce from scratch and it was good. |
| Shrimp tempura. For Ben, 'cause shrimp is gross. |
| This blog entry it brought to you by IKEA. |
| Sushi bar. |
| Autobots, roll out. |
| Yum! |
| We made a ton of sushi. |
| CA rolls, spicy tuna rolls & tuna rolls |
| Maybe I should invest in a bottle chiller... |
| An hour and a half later. |
| Bon appetit. Oh whatever it is in Japanese. |
It was all pretty dang good.
And a lot of fun to make!
However, the time and the money it took to prepare this awesome meal is better spent having someone else make it for you.
We'll be storing the bamboo mat in the drawer for a while and leave it to the pros.

ReplyDeleteA few pointers from an experienced sushi maker - FYA.
ReplyDelete1. Don't shop at Whole Foods. Costco has the best ahi! And it's inexpensive - one steak will make more than enough for two people.
2. Light layer of rice. I've used brown rice for a little added nutrition.
3. I'll send you my poki recipe. It's really good and less work to make.
4. You're right about letting the professionals - and it's fun.
5. I recognize those plates. Glad they've been passed down.
6. YFA loves you and Ben!
